Raima Sen's secret date with Brett Lee

Bengali beauty Raima Sen is bonding with the Australian pace bowler Brett Lee nowadays.

Raima Sen - Brett Lee

Lee, who is currently in India to play for Shahrukh Khan’s IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, apparently has a fan in the sloe-eyed stunner Raima Sen. She recently went on a date with Lee.

A day before the date, Raima herself wrote on her Twitter page: “And lunch with BRET LEE tomorrow....keep u posted”.

However, the lunch date turned into a coffee date, for she wrote after meeting Lee: “Had coffee with Brett Lee....it was fab.”

Wonder what happened to the lunch with the Kolkata Knight Rider player? She also put up a snapshot of hers with Lee and a photographer.

The existing ground is named Duleep cricket ground. The new stadium will be named after Jai Mehta’s grandfather Nanji Kalidas Mehta. Porbandar is selected for the cricket ground because it is the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi and in addition Jai hails from Porbandar and he has some business interest around the place. The stadium will benefit KKR also, it will be a training camp for them.

Says a source, "The local district cricket association and Mehta Sports Private Limited recently inked a deal to build the Nanji Kalidas Mehta stadium at a cost of almost Rs 10 crore."

Adds the source, "They have decided on a three-tiered approach. First they plan to make at least 12 pitches, then the dressing rooms and finally the stands. UK-based David Hemstock Associates will develop the outfield and dressing rooms."

South Indian actor nets Rs 40 cr in final

Bookies say he was so sure of an Indian victory that he placed all his bets on the Men in Blue; Rs 25,000 crore was bet on the match from across the world.

TEAM India's dogged determination despite losing the wickets of Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in quick succession spelt doom for bookies, even as it helped a popular south Indian actor net a cool Rs 40 crore.

The actor, who was sure of an Indian victory, placed all his bets on the Men in Blue.

"Some Bollywood celebrities held a meeting with bookies at Lokhandwala before heading to the stadium. Lekin saara paisa woh Madras ka hero le kar gaya," lamented a bookie.

Bookie losses

Odds oscillated wildly throughout yesterday's match, with India ceding the favourites tag to Sri Lanka after Tendulkar's early exit.

The Men in Blue started out at 57 paise, which climbed to Rs 1.18 when India was 31-2. The Sri Lankans then became favourites with their odds at 81 paise as opposed to the Rs 1.70 they had started out with.

Things changed again when Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli consolidated the innings without letting the asking rate shoot up.

"We had to switch off our phones for more than 15 minutes to avoid taking more bets on India. It was only after Kohli fell to Dilshan that we accepted bets again.

But Dhoni's knock made India the firm favourites one more time. God was not with us and we lost a lot of money," said a bookie.

Sources said more than Rs 25,000 crore was bet on Saturday's match in cricket-loving countries such as India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Dubai.

India team didn't get food before semifinal!

Dhoni says team went hungry before semifinal

A scheduling mix-up meant MS Dhoni’s men went without food for the entire morning before the World Cup semifinal against Pakistan.

Dhoni told a news conference on Friday that his players couldn’t get breakfast at the team hotel and had to eat quickly right before the toss in Wednesday’s match.

“The first meal that we had was just before the toss because food was not served at the hotel,” Dhoni said. “They said that it would take an hour to serve breakfast, so we turned up at the field but there was nothing actually at the ground.”

Dhoni, who won the toss and elected to bat first in that game, said such things could distract players.

“What is important is what you can do about it. You may scream, you may shout but you will not get the food. So what is important is to use the time in the best possible manner. We went to the field and did our warm-up and had our food before the toss,” he added.

Cricket is an amazing phenomenon that unites India! If you happen see a huge crowd outside the TV shop around the corner, it's got to be India playing a cricket match. Be it a scorching hot day in Delhi or a damp and rainy one in Kolkata, nothing can dampen the spirit of the fans.

The crowd forgets everything else and screams in unison when Sachin hits a six, be it in the the stadium or the office cafeteria or the local groceries shop with a TV or the hostel common room or outside a restaurant in a premium mall or may be even your own drawing room. I am myself a great fan of the game!! And so I thought of dedicating this post to all those who love the game and makes the effort to show it as well :)

I really wish I could take some pictures myself, but did not get a chance to go to the stadium. So putting up some stuff from the web that I found interesting! Tell me which one you liked the best!

Sania caught in Indo-Pak 'war' with husband

A mini-battle of loyalty is simmering between star couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik as India gear to take on Pakistan in a high-voltage World Cup semi-final clash next week.

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik

Mirza, India's top-ranked women's tennis player, will be rooting for her country despite her marriage to former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik.

"I support India and Shoaib will support Pakistan as usual! The war is on," Mirza wrote on her Twitter account from Miami where she is taking part in a WTA event.

India booked a last-four World Cup berth against their arch-rivals after beating defending champions Australia by five wickets in the quarter-final in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Pakistan made the semi-finals with a 10-wicket mauling on West Indies the day before.

Mirza, 24, married Malik in Hyderabad in April last year amid a lot of hype surrounding the love-struck cross-border sport stars.

Mirza said she would have loved to catch the semi-final action in Mohali next Wednesday but for her professional commitments.

"The last time they played in Mohali I watched the match live. What a semi-final on the line. Wish I could be there," read another tweet from the tennis star.

Malik and Mirza's sporting marriage is unprecedented in the perennial rivalry between the South Asian nations, and some right-wing Hindu groups in India had denounced the union, accusing Mirza of betraying her country.

India's doubles tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi also tweeted about the excitement that was building up ahead of the marquee match.

"Enjoy it boys... You're half way there. We are dancing in Miami," tweeted Bhupathi.

I am playing for a very special person: Yuvraj Singh

“For the first time in my life there have been claps in a press conference. I am sure this is a special moment for me, guys.” Yuvraj Singh made a telling opening statement. The whole media room was in splits. For the next 17 minutes Yuvraj played the role of entertainer effortlessly, his answers laced with wit and charm.

It was difficult to imagine the man sitting there as the same one who had fought doubts, conditions and the formidable Australian fast bowlers and stood tall and strong for one-and-a-half hours to eventually take India into the semi-finals. Still, it was not entirely a surprise; Yuvraj has now been named man of the match in four of India’s seven matches so far this World Cup, so he must be getting used to it.
“I’ve been batting really well since the England game,” Yuvraj said. “The plans are working for me: trying to work till the end, trying to hit the ball down the ground into the gaps. I just kept telling myself to bat till the end, stay till the end.”
With 12.3 overs left, 74 runs required and just one specialist batsman in Suresh Raina for support, Yuvraj was left to hold the Indian innings together and take it past the finish line. The Aussies were steadily closing in, having picked up the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni in quick succession.
Yuvraj had come up with an all-round performance in India’s 80-run victory against West Indies last Sunday. His 113 in that match was his first century since June 2009. It was a knock of determination, as he fought hard to stay on his feet in the Chennai heat while suffering from dehydration; he even threw up a few times while batting. Later in the evening he returned to pick up two wickets to expedite the Indian victory.
Even in the earlier matches in the tournament, he had restrained his attacking instincts admirably to stay put, and brave India through tense moments in victories against Ireland and Netherlands after the main batsmen had lost their way easily. Coming into the quarter-finals, Yuvraj had run the whole gamut of experiences, which only helped him survive the high-pressure situation at Motera, which he said had drained the players both mentally and physically.
On Thursday, he turned up match-fit and was one of India’s best bowlers with two top-order wickets and followed it with an unbeaten 57, an innings he described as one he had built in his dreams exactly a year ago. “The emotions, I really can’t explain them, because it was tough out there. From last year I have been dreaming of playing Australia in a crucial game. I don’t know why Australia; probably because they are three times world champions. I’d been thinking about this moment for the last 365 days and it actually came true. I just believed in myself, I envisioned that moment from time to time: me staying there till the end and hitting the winning runs for India. So it is a very emotional moment for me.”
There were a few jitters, especially the child-like indecisiveness between him and Gambhir while going for tight singles. Gambhir fell victim to one such moment of confusion and was run out. Yuvraj accepted his role in the mix-up. “It was a bit of a mishap with Gautam. We haven’t batted too much together and the running between the wickets was just out of order. And I think it was my mistake and I apologise.”
It was not an isolated incident, as there was immense pressure on both teams. Experienced hands like Brett Lee failed to come through when Yuvraj and Raina began turning the screw on the Australians, at the start of the final eleven overs of the match. Lee had taken the wicket of Dhoni in his previous over, but in the 40th, the pair took him to the cleaners, with Yuvraj hitting two scorching boundaries.
In the next over, Shaun Tait was wayward and gave away 13 runs. Those two overs proved to be one of the catalysts of India’s win, but Yuvraj said it was not a planned counterattack. “It was very difficult to control the emotions because the heartbeat was racing in the pressure situation. If we made one mistake in a situation like today we would be out of the World Cup. Various thoughts run through your mind, but I decided that I would only watch the ball, keep it simple and as far as possible not hit in the air. Unless the asking rate peaked to seven-and-a-half, only then I would go for the big hits; till then I would hold back.”
Yuvraj revealed that there was a driving force behind his recent success, a person he will unveil if India make the final on April 2. “I am playing this tournament for a special person. That special person always comes into my mind whenever I am in a pressure situation. Hopefully it will work out in the end.”
Not only was he a bit secretive, he even turned philosophical about his good work against Australia. “You have a lot of thoughts [in the mind while batting] but whenever you want to desperately do it for your country and your team it somehow works out. It is great it is working at the right moment in the World Cup. It is a great victory for us.”
Yuvraj had planned for every eventuality. On the eve of the match, he was the last batsman to face throwdowns from coach Gary Kirsten. Yuvraj knew the Australians would fire a lot of short-pitched stuff at him to unsettle him. “I just wanted to concentrate on hitting everything down the ground while leaving out the short balls.”
That planning came to fruition on Thursday. He checked his shots and emotions till the victory stroke was unleashed. Once the job was done, he came crashing and sliding down on his knees, the way football players rush to the flag after scoring a goal. Then he let out a victory roar. A little later, he trotted out the jokes.

Shoaib may not play the quarterfinal

Enigmatic fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is unlikely to play any further role for Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup.

Shoaib, 35, announced on Thursday that he will retire after the tournament.
The bowler seems to have lost favour with the team management, including skipper Shahid Afridi, after conceding 28 runs in a single over in a league match against New Zealand and, according to sources, is unlikely to feature in Wednesday's quarterfinal against the West Indies.
"Shoaib basically has lost favour of the captain, coach and some of the other players after the game against New Zealand," a well-informed source told PTI.
"Some of the players are not happy with the way he reacted after the New Zealand innings in Pallekele and behaved with wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal," the source added.
The Jang reported from Sri Lanka that Shoaib apparently had argued with Kamran soon after he dropped two catches, one in his over, and then pushed him.
The source confirmed that after the New Zealand innings, Shoaib had a heated argument with Kamran over the dropped catches, leading to a tense atmosphere in the dressing room.
Pakistan lost the match to New Zealand but the source said that the team management later spoke to the PCB chief, informing him of the incident. The PCB chief reportedly told the team management that if the fast bowler was not behaving, he should not be played again.
"Subsequently, Shoaib was fined USD 2000 and also told by the management in clear terms that it is better if he decided to retire from international cricket," the source said.
According to the source, Shoaib now hardly has any friends left in the team.
"Practically, Shoaib's career is over and the management has decided to at least give him the honour of retiring gracefully by remaining with the team and not going public with his feelings," the source said.
Shoaib has had a controversial and colourful career since his debut in 1997. He has been fined and banned several times during a 14-year-long career.
However, after making a comeback to the team last year, he appeared to have reformed himself but the source said he remained at loggerheads with the management on disciplinary issues in recent months.
"As it is, there is an emphasis now on inducting and reposing more faith in the younger players and to quietly sideline some senior players, including Shoaib and Mohammad Yousuf," the source said.
He said both coach Waqar Younis and Afridi were in favour of inducting new faces, the reason why they had been showing confidence in players like Asad Shafiq and Wahab Riaz.
The source also stated that a recent statement by Shoaib, that if he had played under a captain like Imran Khan it would have helped his career as Imran knew how to use fast bowlers, has also not gone down well with the management.
Manager, Intikhab Alam, however, has maintained that their was no major fight between Shoaib and Kamran and that was not the reason behind Shoaib announcing his retirement.
"I think Shoaib had decided before the World Cup it was time for him to retire and he consulted his family members, who are in Sri Lanka, before announcing his retirement. It didn't come out of the blue. There are no issues within the team," Intikhab told a Pakistani newspaper.

Pakistan 'spot-fixing' trio face judgement day

DOHA: A make-or-break anti-corruption tribunal against Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer opens in Doha Thursday with the players facing lengthy bans if found guilty.

The hearing will be held behind closed doors at the Qatar Financial Centre from 0630 GMT and is scheduled to run until January 11, although lawyers have indicated a verdict may come earlier.

The three face charges of spot-fixing during Pakistan's tour of England last year in a scandal that rocked the sport. It is alleged that they conspired in the bowling of deliberate no-balls -- claims they all deny.

They were provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in September, with the world governing body's code of conduct carrying a minimum five-year ban if corruption charges are proved.

The maximum punishment is life out of the game.

The scandal came to light when Britain's News of the World claimed that seven Pakistani players, including Butt, Aamer and Asif, took money from bookie Mazhar Majeed to obey orders at specific stages in the Lord's Test in August.

Scotland Yard detectives raided the team hotel in London, reportedly confiscating a huge amount of money from Salman's room.

The three-man independent hearing is being led by code of conduct commissioner and leading lawyer Michael Beloff of England, aided by Justice Albie Sachs from South Africa and Kenyan Sharad Rao.

It is set to open with a statement from the prosecution followed by a response from representatives of the three players.

All three have serious legal heavyweights going in to bat for them with paceman Asif, 28, represented by Allan Cameron, brother of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Former Test captain and opening batsman Salman, 26, is represented by British-based lawyer Yasin Patel, while 18-year-old fast bowler Aamer's legal team is headed by Shahid Karim from Pakistan.

British newspapers said Pakistan one-day captain Shahid Afridi and head coach Waqar Younis have been summoned as prosecution witnesses.

While the ICC has made clear it will not be commenting until a verdict is reached, chief executive Haroon Lorgat told the BBC recently he was confident of the case against the players.

"We need to send out a strong message and that is part of what we want to achieve," Lorgat said. "We've worked hard at collecting all the evidence that we would require to make the charges stand."

The Pakistan team are currently touring New Zealand, but speaking ahead of the hearing, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt told reporters that corruption was a curse that must be stamped out.

"It has to be an all-out effort from all concerned to ensure that such wrongdoing does not occur in the future and we at the PCB are doing all we can to curtail all such practices," he said.

"The PCB and ICC have taken a lot of steps, future plans have been drafted to pursue a policy of zero tolerance to corruption."

The scandal is seen as the worst in cricket since that of South Africa's Hansie Cronje.

A decade ago the former South Africa captain, who died in a mysterious plane crash in 2002, was revealed to have accepted money from bookmakers in a bid to influence the course of games as well as trying to corrupt his team-mates.
