Rajeev Masand: Male Superstar + A-List Actress

Courtesy Rajeev Masand at Open Magazine
Starry Starry Night
There has been incessant chatter about the closeness between this male superstar and his A-list co-actress ever since they first acted together in an action film a few years ago. And now, insiders say the couple has rekindled their affair. It’s a messy situation, given that the superstar isn’t single. The actress, meanwhile, has got out of an on-off relationship she was in for a few years, though she has never denied her fondness for the superstar.

During a public function recently, the actress is believed to have waited backstage for the superstar to finish his performance so she could leave with him. It’s also true that the superstar has made sure that she has been cast as the female lead in two new films he’s signed recently. Industrywalas haven’t missed the irony, given that the star has always preferred to ‘mix it up’ and work with different actresses at any given time.
Secure behind the carefully constructed image of a perfect family man, the actor has had fewer romantic link-ups than most of his co-stars. However, his friends justify the affair with the explanation that few men can resist the temptation when an attractive woman practically throws herself at you.

Rajeev Masand: No One Wants to Act Opposite her

Oh, this week's blind item in Open Magazine made me sad:
No One Wants to Act Opposite Her
She was a popular leading lady not so long ago, even if her acting skills weren’t much to speak of. She had films opposite every top Khan; she worked regularly with the Chopras and Johars, and the media loved her. Until it all suddenly went south. Practically overnight, the offers stopped coming. She became yesterday’s news.

Didn’t help that she took off to the US to pursue everything from short-term business courses to new boyfriends, while her career was folding up back home. On her return, she found that nobody wanted to hire her anymore. Younger, better actresses had shown up, and her place in the sun was gone.
Now it appears that with great difficulty the actress has succeeded in finding a financier who’s agreed to bankroll a new film that she is set to produce with herself in the lead. Since no A-list director will work with her, she’s roped in a talentless hack whose first film was a box-office disaster. It appears that the romantic comedy will be filmed in Europe, and while pre-production is complete, the actress and her director friend are now struggling to cast a male lead.
Turns out the younger lot has no interest in being cast opposite ‘an older’ actress, and the Khans she once did successful films with have moved on to working with younger heroines. Nobody will say ‘yes.’ As the start date on filming draws scarily close, the actress is still reportedly scrambling for a half-popular star to take the lead opposite her. Industry insiders are whispering that it’s going to be hard for her to make any sort of impactful comeback, given that her looks have begun to betray her too. All that Botox has made it hard to tell if she’s genuinely excited about something, or those arched eyebrows are just frozen permanently.

Rajeev Masand: Money in Hand, Missing in Action

Courtesy Rajeev Masand of Open Magazine:
It appears that this 50-something male star has become a thorn in the side of his producers. The actor allegedly greenlighted an action movie whose script he was offered by a first-time director, accepted a Rs 1 crore signing amount for the film, then went incommunicado for the next two years or so. The desperate filmmakers simply couldn’t get in touch with the star to procure his dates so they could start the film. When an actor-producer who was acquainted with the unprofessional star intervened on behalf of the harrowed filmmakers, the star revealed that he was no longer convinced about the script and had no interest in doing the movie anymore. Asked to return the signing amount in that case, the star refused. He’d already used it, he said, and added that it wasn’t his fault the script wasn’t good enough to go.

Left with no other option, the filmmakers spent the better part of the third year working on a new script. This was to be an ensemble piece, as the star had categorically said he no longer wanted to do an action movie that he’d be required to carry on his shoulders. He also offered only 15 shooting dates for the film, and demanded an additional Rs 7 crore as his fee. All terms were agreed upon. The new script that was delivered was a suspense thriller on the lines of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, and production finally began in Goa where the star had promised to show up on an agreed date.
On the said date, the filmmakers reportedly received a call from the star’s smarmy manager, who announced that his boss wouldn’t be flying in as he was tied up with legal issues. He couldn’t confirm when the star would ultimately show up, and hinted that he might be able to help if his palms could be greased. After pocketing a cool Rs 35 lakh, the manager ensured that the star arrived in Goa for the shoot, albeit a week after the initially agreed date.

Rajeev Masand: The Casanova, the Socialite & the Actress

Rajeev Masand's blind item in Open Magazine this week is juicy:
It’s been a quiet few weeks for this Casanova star who’s been linked to a new lady every weekend for the past couple of months. But now the grapevine’s buzzing again. It appears that the actor, while shooting in London recently for a new film, hooked up with a prominent Mumbai socialite who is separated from her husband. Mother of a teenage girl, the la-di-dah lady is believed to have set her eyes on the handsome actor months ago. She happens to move in the same circles as his aunt, and is connected to the film industry through her sister-in-law, a popular Bollywood fashion designer.

The actor is also believed to have reignited the flame with a silver screen siren who he had starred with in a movie some years ago and is rumoured to have fooled around with on the sly at the time. The recently-single heroine has never hidden her fondness for the young star, and insiders say she’s not shying away from throwing herself at him now that she doesn’t have a boyfriend she must worry about upsetting.

Rajeev Masand's Blind Item: Extravagance on Expense Account

Rajeev Masand's blind item in this week's Open Magazine is not as juicy as his previous ones:
Extravagance on Expense Account
It’s the hottest ticket this summer. A youthful multi-starrer filmed in Europe and produced by one of Bollywood’s top banners. Industry insiders are whispering that at a landing cost of roughly Rs 75 crore, it’s going to be hard for this film to make money, even if big numbers do flock the multiplexes when it opens. It turns out the lavish production flew stars and their ‘plus-ones’ First Class from Mumbai to the shoot location (and back). Once there, talent was checked into fancy suites at the finest five-star, and daily shopping excursions were organised for bored star-wives and accompanying families. The show-off producer even hired a luxury cruise at one point during the roughly 40-day schedule, so spouses and girlfriends could keep themselves occupied while the stars and crew remained busy on set.

With such extravagant but unnecessary expenses, it’s hardly surprising that the film’s actual production budget escalated to a whopping Rs 50 crore, to which the producers have reportedly added a fat margin of close to Rs 25 crore. It’s being bankrolled by a top distributor who has had to shell out these big bucks and then pray that his investment doesn’t go down the drain. Meanwhile, the producers continue to revel in the reputation of being one of Bollywood’s coolest and most generous film-making companies. All very well, except that none of this generosity is coming out of their own pockets.

Angela Jonsson: "Ranbir and I have dated"

Courtesy: Mid-Day
Angela Jonsson admits to going out with Ranbir Kapoor, but not with Shahid
While she's more famous for being Ranbir Kapoor's arm candy at recent events, Angela Jonsson is also a calendar girl. Her link-up to the Casanova actor recently made headlines as did her tryst with Shahid Kapoor.
Says a source close to the model, "The last couple of weeks have been traumatic for Angela and her family.

She has been caught up in one controversy after another, apart from being accused of linking herself to hot and happening stars only for publicity and to get a foothold into the film industry.
Angela is a well-behaved and soft-spoken girl from a decent family and was aghast to find herself in the spotlight with negative stories piling about her.
While she has dated Ranbir, has attended parties and has gone out with him in public, Angela has not interacted with Shahid at all beyond meeting him a few times at parties, one of which Ranbir accompanied her to."
The source adds that what bothered Angela was when stories of her dating Ranbir started getting leaked to the media and was then blamed on her. "Angela has little knowledge about B-Town so it came as a shock to her when there were reports that she was spreading these stories."
Angela says, "I have always refrained from commenting on my personal life so far but the news reports that have been doing the rounds have caused immense and unnecessary stress to my family and to me.
Therefore I need to set the record straight once and for all. Yes, Ranbir and I have dated. We have gone out to dinner like two normal adults in the city.
As any gentleman would and should, he asked me out for the record. Since winning the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt, my modeling career has done better than I ever expected. None of the successes can be attributed to anyone other than to my hard work and that of my agents."
On Shaks, Angela says, "I have met Shahid socially and haven't spoken much to him at all. I've met him at Anushka Sharma's birthday, which Ranbir took me to and again at Ranbir's house party as well. I do not have his phone number and have never texted him."
Ranbir remained unavailable for comment.
Shahid's version
A source close to Shahid says, "Shahid has met Angela socially a few times ” at his birthday party, Ranbir's house party and Anushka's party where Angela came with Ranbir. They have never chatted or met beyond that. There is nothing more to it. In fact, Shahid was very upset to hear about stories linking him and Angela."

DNA report - Bollywood star wives and drugs

These days no secrets can be hidden. It is the time of wiki leaks you see. Rajeev Masand started this trend in Bollywood with the blind items he writes for Open Magazine. Leading publications have followed suite.Today, DNA has a report on Bollywood wifes and the use of drugs. I was disillusioned when I read it. I am a bollywood fanatic and I like to keep the picture rosy. But i guess stars lead a rather stressful life and their wifes even more so and they sometimes take the easy route to solve their problems.

So here goes the report. I am not going to take names but it is very clear who they are refering to. What would be your advice to these star wives who are overshadowed by their star husbands?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s well-known in filmy circles that the star wife of a Bollywood hunk (he loves showing off his six packs) fell into severe depression on learning that her husband was sleeping with an actress. She — let’s call her Mrs N — turned to drugs, and started eating less and less. Despite being slim, she lost 20 kg and now looks reed-thin.
Then there is the wife of a rotund star comedian. She copes with the reality of a husband who doesn’t care about her, and is a schizophrenic to boot, by regularly popping barbiturates.
Similar is the tale of a yesteryear star who had risen to filmy glory from a Mumbai chawl. His beautiful wife got hooked to drugs after she began dating a male model who was a known drug user.
From being a regular on the social circuit, she has withdrawn into a shell since her addiction.
Women of substances
Cases like this are legion, but they rarely come out in the open. Just occasionally there are incidents that indicate what’s going on.
A couple of months back, for instance, the wife of a Bollywood superstar was caught at Berlin airport with marijuana in her handbag. She was subsequently let off because the quantity was less — only enough for personal consumption.
Pressure was brought to bear so that neither the police nor the airport officials dared to reveal her name. And the incident therefore never made it to ‘news’, being consigned to a mention in the gossip columns and tweets.
But industry insiders admit that substance abuse is quite common among Bollywood spouses. Call it the stress of living in the superstar’s shadow. Apparently, beyond the glaring limelight of a movie star, there lies a zone of intense darkness.
More often than not, this is the zone the star wife inhabits. Of course, from time to time, she also gets to bask in the star’s reflected glory. But it is a truism in the Hindi film industry that being a star wife comes at a price.
Dealing with the fact that your identity will be blanked out by your spouse’s, that you’ll forever be referred to as Mrs Bollywood Superstar, takes its toll, and sometimes, the person snaps, and seeks refuge in the embroidered reality of a drug-induced high.
Actor Om Puri’s wife Nandita Puri sets things in perspective, stating bluntly that spouses of many superstars take to drugs and have extra-marital affairs when they can’t cope with the fact that they no longer seem to have an identity of their own.
“You must understand that theirs is a lonely world. It’s like living in a fish bowl, and being unable to get used to it. At first, you enjoy all the attention you get from your spouse’s cronies. Soon, you begin to lose your sense of who you are, who you used to be. And from there, it’s a downward spiral — leading to depression, drugs and all the rest.”
The experience of star wife, Mrs N, buttresses Puri’s viewpoint. “When I am invited to events and parties, it is on account of me being N’s wife. People talk as if I am responsible for his hits and misses and his good and bad performances on screen. Even when I visit a friend’s pyjama party, the whole evening is spent discussing him. There are times when I ask myself ‘God! When did my life become only about him? What about me?’ The very fact that I don’t enjoy this anymore is a sign that I need to break off and go somewhere and be my own self,” she says candidly.
“Things were worse when he was having an affair. People began to treat me as if I had lost my husband. My children were coming and asking me, ‘What’s wrong with daddy’, my brother was calling to ask me if it was really true and if I am moving out, and of course, there’s this big, bad friend-circle of mine who would wonder insinuatingly if he had lost interest in me because I don’t have sex the way he likes to or as often as he wants to.”
‘Coke only once in a while’
Mrs N, who herself comes from a leading film family, admits that she gets stoned just to escape the unpleasant reality of her marital life.
“I get together with my group of friends, and we smoke a lot of pot. We giggle and laugh when we are high, play games. Sometimes they bring tablets, and some snort cocaine. I do coke only once in a while. It transports you to a time and place where you are not bothered what’s happening in the here and now, and more importantly, you are not bothered what your husband is doing. It’s a blissful escape…” she trails off.
Model and actress Monikangana Dutta, who is part of the social circle that also includes perpetually coked up star spouses, believes that the stress of being a star spouse hits those women the hardest who just sit at home doing nothing.
“Not working, only looking good all the time, and ending up just socialising every day takes a toll on your sanity. You get a feeling that there’s nothing concrete in your life. On top of that, the husband is famous, and gets plenty of attention from attractive female fans and aspiring starlets — all that makes some women even more insecure, and they end up destroying themselves.”
In a way, being married to a star means you are married to someone super-successful, and this is a constant reminder to star wives of how unsuccessful they themselves are, avers clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany, who has quite a few clients from Bollywood film families. “The best way to cope is to develop your own identity. And in the case of a drug addiction, they need to undergo a rehab programme followed by counselling.”
Puri sums up the predicament of star spouses in a nutshell. “Most of them are just plain tired of pampering their husband’s egos all the time. They are tired of walking in their shadows, and tired of forgiving every time their husbands cheat. There are times when you simply cannot digest the fact that your whole life centers around one person, a person who doesn’t even care about you, and there is no way out. The tragedy is that even if you leave your star husband, you will spend the rest of your life being known as that person’s ex.”

Rajeev Masand: The Unprofessional A-list Actor

Rajeev Masand's blind item for this week's Open Magazine post is a lot easier to guess than last week's:
As Unprofessional As Ever
Notorious for his unprofessional on-set behaviour, this A-list male star has been claiming that he’s turned over a new leaf. The unexpected runaway success of his pet project last year may have given him a confidence boost, but despite his claims insiders say he’s still very much the spoilt brat. The actor still doesn’t show up before 2 pm for a 9 am shift, and once on set, allegedly changes scenes and dialogues if he doesn’t think they work. It isn’t unusual for him to literally ‘take over’ the action sequences from the director, and to plan them and execute them himself with some help from the action director.

The cameraman of his most recent film reveals that the star has very little patience when it comes to lighting up a shot. “When I asked for an hour in between shots to light up the next, he threw a fit and threatened to leave if I was going to waste his time,” the troubled technician reveals. The actor is believed to have added dismissively: “That’s what colour-correction is for. Fix the lighting in post-production.”
There are rumours that the actor is personally supervising the editing of the film, taking crucial decisions over the director. The film’s producer, an old friend of the star, has allegedly given him carte blanche on the project, thereby alienating other technicians, including the exasperated director who isn’t thrilled about being forced to take a backseat.

Katrina Kaif has no talent - Sofia Hayat

Frankly I did not know who Sofia was, so I had to read up to know more about her.
Sofia Hayat or Sofia Hayat-Khan is a British Asian actress, singer and model. She will be debuting in the bollywood film, "Diary of a Butterfly".
There was also this very interesting and rather sad article about her at Daily Mail.
But my post is not about all that but her interview to Times of India where she talks about Katrina Kaif. read on.
She has been in the news for her raunchy bikini act in her debut film, Diary of a Butterfly, but British-Indian actor Sofia Hayat insists her talent lies elsewhere.
"I am a trained actor with a degree in acting and dance. How many actors in India have that? I have come here with six years' acting experience," says Sofia.
The actress, who has been in Mumbai for the last six months, has already been signed up for three films. She claims she knows her "trade well", unlike other Indian actors. "If Katrina Kaif, who has no talent, can make it big, then watch out India, here comes Sofia. I've watched her (Katrina) perform live to Sheila Ki Jawani and she was expressionless. She was like, 'How much am I getting paid to do this show?'" claims Sofia.

Quiz her about the media reports claiming that she is of Pakistani origin, and she sets the record straight: "Both my parents are Indian, while my great grandfather was Persian. I don't know how these reports came out wrong."
The actress, who is noted for her glamorous image, says that she is not in India for the money. "Believe me, I have made big money in England. I have written a book and I have starred in a BBC series as well. I am a successful actor and I am here only to do meaningful cinema," she says.
And though she's used to wearing skimpy outfits, Sofia says she has outdone herself with her latest sexy photoshoot. "It's my first bikini scene ever in my six-year-long career. And I know it's quite hot on the web, what with people comparing me to other Bollywood stars in a bikini. I worked hard for it as I am not naturally thin. I lost three kgs and my picture has not been photoshopped. I am very pleased with the result and it's my body you see in those pictures. I know for sure that Minissha Lamba's picture has been photoshopped from head to toe," says Sofia.
The bikini scene has earned Sofia many male fans, something that does not bother her. "I have no qualms about doing bikini scenes. After all, I am an artiste and an artiste's job is to entertain," she insists.
As to how the industry works, Sofia says, "The Indian film industry is way different from the one in UK. There, the focus is not so much on what you look like but on your talent. Here, Bollywood demands one to be glamorous as well." Does she network with Bollywood biggies? "I think Indian actors are a little stuck-up. They are very pretentious," she laughs.

Rajeev Masand: Another Affair in the Family

Rajeev Masand is back with another blind item for this week in Open Magazine. I had to read it a couple of times before I got it, so if it helps, my clues are that there have been rumours about this actor's affairs in the past and that he isn't the only actor in the family (if of course, my guess is the correct one):
Another Affair in the Family
The star wives’ club in Bollywood has been gossiping lately about this once-popular male star, married and father of two kids, whose marriage has reportedly hit the rocks. It appears that the actor has been in a serious relationship with a divorced woman he met last year while shooting for a film in the north. The lady in question is mother to a teenage girl, and belongs to a business family. Word on the street is that she’s drop-dead gorgeous. The actor’s wife hails from a prominent business family in Mumbai, and recently inherited a neat fortune. Apparently she is aware of her husband’s relationship, but has chosen to turn a blind eye to his indiscretions. Friends of the actor say he is besotted with the new woman in his life, but he’s made it clear that he won’t leave his family. Extra-marital relationships aren’t uncommon in this actor’s family. He isn’t the first man in that house to get into a serious romantic relationship beyond his marriage.

Sourav Ganguly to star in Dabangg-2 along with Salman Khan

Mumbai. Sourav Ganguly had decided to go all out against Shah Rukh Khan for not having retained him for the fourth season of IPL. The former Indian captain has decided to join hands with SRK’s Bollywood enemy Salman Khan and agreed to play a role in the sequel to the superhit movie Dabangg. Dada would be seen beating the hell out of an SRK’s lookalike in the movie.
“After Salman Khan refused to accept the apology of SRK that was issued on a television show instead of being offered in person, Dada too decided to refuse the support that was shown by SRK in newspapers instead of extending the same on the auction floor,” said a source, explaining what brought Dada and Salman together.

Salman Khan has already started rehearsing for the planned movie with Sourav Ganguly
Following the principle of “enemy of an enemy is a friend”, Dada and Salman decided to join hands and almost immediately it was decided that Dada would play a role in the sequel to Salman’s Dabangg.
“They decided the script in a few minutes,” our source informed, “as was the case with the original movie.”
According to our trusted sources, Dabangg-2 too would see a new villain, Pota Singh, to be played by an SRK lookalike, who would kill Salman’s i.e. Chulbul Pandey’s brother Makhkhi (Arbaaz Khan) during a village cricket match for bowling a bouncer.

Following the brutal murder, Chulbul would vow to avenge the death of his brother and team up with Pota Singh’s estranged opening partner Daddu Singh, to be played by Sourav Ganguly, and finally kill Pota Singh even more brutally in the middle of the same cricket ground.
“Deepika Padukone and Siddharth Mallya are being roped in for an item song, where they would dance as cheerleaders in the same cricket ground, but they are non-committal as of yet,” our source further informed.
Shooting for the movie is slated to begin “anytime, anywhere” according to the sources, and the producers are planning to release it along with SRK’s upcoming movie Ra.One to rub salt on SRK’s wounds.
“Just like he had done with Dada by issuing out that statement,” our source explained.

I was offered Salman's Yash Raj Film - Shah Rukh Khan

I am at a loss for words after reading this interview that Shah Rukh Khan gave Sonal Kalra from Hindustan Times.

He says - Kings dont ask. I am not a Badshaah for nothing. I dont need to ask for things.

Attached the HT interview.

Katrina Kaif voted best Indian celebrity match for Prince William

Prince William may be tying the knot with Kate Middleton tomorrow but Bollywood celebrity Katrina Kaif has been voted as the best Indian celebrity match for the British bridegroom in a poll here.

Shaadi.com, the world's largest matrimonial service, conducted a poll amongst its members on which Indian celebrity would make a good pair with Prince William.

Out of the 8000 surveyed, 75.3 per cent respondents believed that Katrina would be the best Indian celebrity match for Prince William, followed by Priyanka Chopra with 16.7 per cent and Sonakshi Sinha with 8 per cent.

"With the hype of royal wedding around the globe, Shaadi.com conducted the survey to reflect the enthused spirit about the wedding in India," Gourav Rakshit, Business Head, Shaadi.com said in a release.

Sonakshi Sinha jealous of Zarine Khan?

Last week after the music launch of Ready, Salman Khan decided to hold an impromptu bash at his house.

Leading lady Asin, as well as Zarine Khan who has done an item song in the film, got the invitation at the venue itself. Others received calls from Salman to join in the celebrations. Sonakshi Sinha joined the revellers at the Dabangg actor's pad later that night.

It has been reported that Sonakshi is super possessive about the actor and doesn't like other actresses cosying upto him. But this time she made a show of her anger. An eye-witness reveals, "She pushed Zarine, while walking past her, and then pretended that she hadn't even realised it!" It is known that Salman has a soft spot for both Sonakshi as well as Zarine and has been recommending their names to filmmakers. He is partial to them because they debuted with him — Zarine in Veer and Sona in Dabangg.

The insider continues, "It was such a sight. We thought a catfight would break out. We didn't know where to look and whether to laugh. When Sona first walked in, she walked past Zarine, without greeting her. Later when she saw that ZK was bonding with Salman and he was introducing her to all her friends, the Dabangg girl couldn't hide her irritation. Also the fact that Sallu got his buddy Sajid Nadiadwala to cast Zarine in Housefull 2 was still bothering her. Never mind the fact that he was instrumental in getting her a role in Shirish Kunder's Joker. Sonakshi sees Zarine as a rival for Salman's affections and young and spunky that she is, the Shotgun Junior (as she calls herself) decided to literally push her out of her way.

Interestingly, Salman was busy with his other friends and did not see her push the Veer girl. When Zarine reacted, Sonakshi told her it was "an accident. Not done intentionally". We want to believe Sonakshi, but we remember her cold vibes with Sallu's ex Katrina Kaif. Now Zarine is at the receiving end. While Zarine remained unavailable for comment, Sonakshi
denied the incident.

"If he is Big B, then I am double B" - Shatrughan Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha, whose stint as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati in Bhojpuri is already being compared with Amitabh Bachchan, the current host of Kaun Banega Crorepati in Hindi, says he will not imitate his yesteryear's contemporary.

"If he is Big B, then I am double B (Bihari Babu)," says Sinha jokingly. "Why shold I imitate Amitabh Bachchan? He has his own style on KBC and I will have my own. I don't claim I'm better than him but I don't feel I'm inferior to him either. He's an old friend."

Kaun Banega Crorepati's first season aired in 2000. Bachchan hosted season two, and more recently season four. The show is poised to return later this year for season five.

Shatrughan SinhaSinha says he's aware that Bachchan's performance as the anchor casts a long shadow but is confident that his own original style will connect with the Bhojpuri audience. "Be it films or TV shows, I have never copied anyone. I think it's for the viewers to judge our performances," he adds.

The actors worked together in Dostana, Shaan, Naseeb and Kala Pathartogether. Sinha, who is rehearsing for Ke Bani Crorepati, agreed to anchor the show to promote Bhojpuri language.

"It was spoken by leading personalities of the country including the first President of Independent India Rajendra Prasad, Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan and late Prime Minister Chandrasekhar. I wish to spread the awareness about the language," he adds.(Bihari Babu)," says Sinha jokingly. "Why shold I imitate Amitabh Bachchan? He has his own style on KBC and I will have my own.
